What do I need to do at the scene?
Call AutoMate on 435-2000. However should you decide not to:
- Do not admit liability or sign any agreement except one given to the Police.
- It is in your interest to take as much information as possible on the other parties involved in the
accident and most importantly the names and addresses of any witnesses to
the accident as they will help to validate your claim report.
- If it is a minor accident and both parties are willing to settle it amicably, it is not necessary to
call the Police but you must be able to give us specific details of the
accident.
- If any of the parties involved are injured, whether the injury appears to be serious or not, you must
wait for the Police to attend the scene and take measurements and
statements from all parties concerned.
- Report the accident to us as soon as possible. This will not in any way prejudice your driving or
insurance record if no claim is made.
Make notes. Keep a pad and pencil in your glove compartment. Write down:
- the names and addresses of all drivers and passengers involved in the accident.
- license plate numbers
- make and model of each car
- driver's license numbers
- insurance identifications
- names and addresses of witnesses
- names and badge numbers of police officers or other emergency personnel.
What CGI will do for you?
For Comprehensive Insurance
- If the accident occurs during
working hours, have the vehicle towed to the authorized dealer or the
garage of your choice.
- If the accident occurs after
normal working hours the wrecker will usually arrange to keep the vehicle
overnight pending further instruction.
- The reasonable cost of towing
is covered under your policy and we will settle this bill directly with
the wrecker.
- We recommend that you remove
from the vehicle any accessories that may be stolen.
Loss of use cover:
- If you are not at fault, we
will arrange to have you provided with a rental car at no cost.
- If you are at fault, we will
arrange to provide you with a rental car for a maximum period of seven
days but you will have to pay an additional excess.
- You should not make any
arrangements for a rental car unless you have cleared it with us first and
we have given the rental car company our commitment to pay.
Settling your claim
For Comprehensive Insurance
- We will settle your claim and
if necessary, recover all your losses from the third party insurer on your
behalf.
- You must complete a claim form
by calling a claims officer at 435 2000, or completing the form online at
http://www.insurecgi.com, then allow us to inspect the
vehicle before any repairs may be authorized.
- When submitting your claim form
you will need to provide us with a copy of your drivers’ license.
For Third Party Insurance:
- If the other party is at fault
we will assist you in recovering your losses from a third party insurer.
- You must complete a claim form
by calling a claims officer at 435 2000, or completing the form online at
http://www.insurecgi.com before we may assist you in
this recovery.
All
property for which you have received payment becomes our property. Please refer
to the policy booklet for further details on the cover provided by your policy.
What is excess?
- An excess is the amount you
agree to pay if you file a claim under comprehensive insurance.
- If you are determined not at fault for the accident, the excess will be refunded to you.
What is my car worth?
Depending on what type of insurance you have you will be paid out differently.
Agreed Value
- If your car is covered on an
agreed value basis and is damaged beyond repair, it does not matter who is
at fault. We will always honour our obligation to you on an agreed value basis.
- If the other party is at fault,
we will pay you the agreed value less any excess and recover from the
other insurer. If we recover more than the agreed value, we will pass on
any surplus to you.
Indemnity
If your car is covered on an indemnity value basis
and is damaged beyond repair, we will need to obtain a pre-accident valuation
of the vehicle before your claim may be settled. The most we will pay is the
market value of the vehicle immediately before the accident or the insured
value whichever is the lesser and we will deduct your policy excess.
Do I have to file a police report for my claim to be covered?
Not usually. But if the accident involves a hit and run, or your vehicle was stolen, you
will be required to do so.
It is advisable to call the police when there are any injuries involved, or if
there is any dispute of liability.
